Why is there no Lavender in Lavender Hill?

A gang infested community that really needs help.

The Lavender in Lavender Hill project is a Social Enterprise which aims to plant 1,000,000 Lavender Plants in Lavender Hill, a struggling community in Cape Town, South Africa. The vision is to populate Lavender Hill with Lavender and in so doing create an urban farm for the production of lavender products.

The urban farm will create jobs and skills transferral, but most of all the vision is to create Social Art. Imagine a community, a backdrop lush with colour, luxuriously perfumed with fields of sweet lavender. The beauty of the lavender fields will instil pride in the community and will become a tourist attraction, giving exposure to a community once avoided. This will over time reduce the crime, violence, gangsterism, drug use and attitude of no hope.

Lavender in Lavender Hill was started in April 2011 by Charles Maisel and Marcelle van Zyl.

With Lavender in Lavender Hill being the pilot project, we hope to take this project into other struggling communities.

At Lavender in Lavender Hill we are not only Social Entrepreneurs but Social Artists and this will be our most magnificent Artwork.



Donate a Plant

Donate a plant for R25 which will be planted into an underbeautified community.

Why not sow your love in more than one way? Birthday, anniversary, Valentine ’s Day – gift a Love Plant which will be planted for your loved one by the Lavender in Lavender Hill team.

Email us you and your loved one’s name and we will send you an e-card with the street and community name of where your Love Plant was planted. This you can forward to your love.

Company or School Planting Days

Get your team from work into the field to plant a lavender garden. Planting days make great team-building and Corporate Social Responsibility projects.

Get your class from school to plant a lavender garden as a school outing. Planting days are great for learning skills and for giving back to the community.

Lavender Workshop

Visit one of our lavender nurseries where you will be taught how to grow lavender plants from off cut lavender cuttings. Then get your hands dirty and practice what you have learnt.
Ideal for Companies as team building events. Also therapeutic and stress relieving.

Ideal for Schools as skills training outings.
Ideal for any group for  skills training, fun, stress relief, team building and giving back.

Lavender Power Schools

5-10 motivated schools. The school creates a Lavender Entrepreneurial Power Club. The club is not just about Community Upliftment but about learning entrepreneurial skills. By being creative in their thinking of how to support the LILH cause through fundraising, events and more, they will learn management, innovation and entrepreneurial skills. 

Schools Receive: Power Club Certificate; Entrepreneur & Lavender workshops.

Volunteer/Intern

Volunteer your time once every two weeks to plant plants, grow cuttings, work at the nurseries and fields and help the community.

Intern in community upliftment and project management on site.

Intern in entrepreneurship, marketing, sales, fundraising at Head Quarter.

Our Wish List

Lavender Cuttings - Let us prune your lavender bush. We will replant the cuttings and grow them into plants

Paint (white and lilac) - To paint the walls behind each lavender garden that we plant

Holders - planting trays, pots, bags, small and large yoghurt tubs, the base of cool drink bottles

Planting Products - Soil, compost, rooting powder, bone meal, fertilizer, gardening tools

Container - to create a clean and safe production centre of lavender products
